1. Protected Principles

The Vegan Castle Housing Co-Operative operates under Protected Principles, which

guide all decisions and operations:

1. Intentional Community Living - The Vegan Castle Co-Op is an intentional community built on gratitude, presence and shared purpose. We recognise the privilege and responsibility of living within this sacred place and are committed to nurturing both the land and one another. Our community life is guided by cooperation, kindness and respect - preserving The Vegan Castle's beauty, grandeur, heritage and harmony for all who call it home and for the wider community. We live with awareness that our collective wellbeing is inseparable from the wellbeing of The Vegan Castle itself.

2. Sanctity of Life – The Vegan Castle Co-Op honours the sanctity of all life. We recognise every being - human, animal and the natural world - as sacred and interconnected. Our actions and choices seek to cause no harm, fostering peace, compassion and reverence for all forms of life.

3. Veganism - Compassion for all beings, rejecting animal abuse and animal exploitation.

4. Sustainability - We commit to the responsible use of natural resources, water, energy and materials. All operations must minimise ecological impact and support long-term planetary health.

5. Respect for Land & Buildings - The Vegan Castle Co-Op is a heritage site of historic, cultural and spiritual significance. We commit to stewarding, conserving and regenerating the land and buildings with care, skill and reverence.

6. Inclusion – We welcome all who share our values to participate meaningfully in community life. Each person contributes in ways that align with their abilities and circumstances, while all voices are valued equally in governance and decision-making. We contribute how we can, but we govern as equals.

7. Unity in Diversity – The Vegan Castle Co-Op honours the beauty of diversity - in people, beliefs and creative expression. We recognise that true unity arises from respecting differences while upholding the shared values that connect us.

8. Personal Integrity - The Vegan Castle Co-Op values kindness, accountability and self-awareness. The community commits to taking responsibility for our actions, communicating with honesty and respect and continually nurturing emotional maturity in how we show up for ourselves and others.

9. Relational Safety & Conscious Communication - The Vegan Castle Co-Op recognises that intentional community requires intentional communication. We are committed to cultivating a psychologically, emotionally and physically safe environment for all members, residents, guests and visitors. We practice compassionate, accountable and non-violent communication, recognising that how we speak and listen shapes the integrity of our shared life.

We commit to:

• Addressing conflict directly and constructively

• Taking responsibility for our words, tone and impact

• Seeking understanding before judgment

• Respecting boundaries, consent and confidentiality

Harassment, intimidation, discrimination, gossip, coercion, or verbal aggression have no place within The Vegan Castle. Where conflict arises, we prioritise dialogue, mediation and restorative processes before escalation, unless immediate safeguarding requires protective action. The safety and wellbeing of the collective shall always take precedence over individual preference or ego.

10. Conscious Consumption & Regeneration - The Vegan Castle Co-Op honours the Earth’s resources by practicing mindful consumption and cultivating a culture of restoration. We strive to live simply - choosing quality, longevity and necessity over excess - and to repair, reuse, recycle and repurposing wherever possible. As a community, we are committed to moving beyond consumerism, becoming restorers of balance, beauty and organic abundance for future generations.

11. Mindful Living & Substance Awareness - The Vegan Castle Co-Op encourages a culture of clear-headedness, balance and self-awareness. The community does not support substance misuse or behaviours that cause harm, dependency or disruption to ourselves and others. We cultivate an environment where wellbeing, connection and presence are valued above intoxication - supporting each other to live in alignment with clarity, health and respect

12. Safeguarding Children - The Vegan Castle Co-Op is committed to providing a safe, nurturing and supportive environment for all children. We uphold the wellbeing of every child as a shared community responsibility - guiding them with love, patience, wisdom and protection to help them grow in confidence, creativity and live in harmony with nature and community life.

13. Integrity Over Expansion - The Vegan Castle Co-Op will never compromise its principles for profit. We reject corporate models that prioritise growth over quality, extraction over care or profit over people. All development will remain grounded in ethics, transparency and sustainability - growing only in ways that preserve the integrity of the community, the environment and the spirit of Avalon. Success is measured not by accumulation but by balance, health, contributions, service and the shared good we create together.
